We are two people, so a reply can take a day or two — but it will come from one of us, not a ticket system.

Reporting something wrong in the app

If a license plate, a trivia answer, or anything else in the app looks wrong, use Feedback inside Mile Markers rather than email. It records which screen you were on and which question or plate you meant, which is usually the difference between us fixing it and us guessing.

It also works with no signal. Reports are saved on your phone and wait until you have bars again; tapping Send opens your own email app with everything filled in, so you can see exactly what you are sending before it goes.

Questions we get asked

Does it work without cell service?

Yes — that is the whole point. Every game, the state detection, the scoring and the trip journal run on the phone. There is no account to create, nothing to sign in to, and nothing to load. It is built to work in the places where a phone usually stops being useful.

Why does it ask for my location?

To count the miles you drive, notice when you cross a state line, and unlock that state's trivia. Your coordinates are compared against state boundaries stored inside the app, so there is no lookup service to call and nothing is ever transmitted. The app asks only for while using the app permission and never tracks you in the background. The privacy policy spells this out in full.

Can I use it without giving location access?

Yes. Decline the permission and everything still works except automatic mileage, automatic state detection and the miles-to-go countdown. Trivia plays from the Open Road deck about the whole country instead of one state's deck.

How is this fair when players are different ages?

Scoring is handicapped by age. A younger player earns more per find, and in the timed games they also get a longer clock — a six-year-old gets forty seconds where an adult gets twenty. That is deliberate: a game a small child cannot win is a game they stop playing by the second hour.

I tapped something by mistake. How do I undo it?

Press and hold the thing you marked. A plain tap will not undo it, on purpose, because roads are bumpy and accidental taps are common.

Can the driver play?

Yes, two ways. Turn on Settings → For the driver and questions, prompts and suggestions are read aloud, so nobody has to look at a screen. And two of the games — Name Five and 20 Questions — are talking games that need no screen at all.

What is the Glovebox?

A set of things to find. The screen shows you how many there are and gives you a hint about each; working out how to open them is the game. We are not going to spoil them here.

Does it work on iPad?

Yes, with a layout built for the bigger screen rather than a stretched phone app.

Is it suitable for children?

It is built to be played by children alongside adults. The app collects nothing from anyone, there is no chat, no social features, no ads, and no links out except to Wikipedia in the plate guide. Player names and ages are typed in by whoever sets up the trip, are used only for the scoreboard and the age handicap, and never leave the phone — nicknames work perfectly well.

How do I delete my data?

Delete the app. Everything Mile Markers stores lives in the app's own storage on your device, so removing the app removes all of it permanently. You can also clear individual trips from inside the app. There is nothing held on our side to delete, because nothing was ever sent to us.

The sound is annoying / the sound is too quiet.

Game sounds can be turned off entirely in Settings. The app also respects your phone's silent switch, and it is built to play over your music rather than pausing it. If a particular sound grates after the fiftieth time, tell us — that is exactly the kind of thing we want to hear about.
